A

Accumulator/battery

The e-bike battery (accumulator) is the energy storage device that supplies the motor of e-bikes, Pedelecs and Speed Pedelecs with electricity. While it is colloquially referred to as a battery, strictly speaking it is usually an arrangement of several interconnected rechargeable accumulator cells. The range of the e-bike depends on the capacity of the battery.

Four different batteries are available for Stromer Speed Pedelecs with ranges of 90 km (500 Wh), 120 km (618 Wh), 150 km (814 Wh) and 180 km (983 Wh). Each battery is compatible with any Stromer. Did you already know? The Stromer V1 was the world's first S-Pedelec to have its battery integrated into the downtube

Ampere/Ampere-hour

Ampere is the unit of measurement of electric current. It describes how many charges per a specified time flow through a given conductor cross-section. The capacity of batteries is specified in ampere-hours (Ah). An ampere-hour (Ah) is the amount of charge that has flowed through a conductor after one hour at a current strength of one ampere.

Assistance level

The motor assistance is specified as a percentage of the pedaling force used and is often divided into levels of 50 %, 100 % and 150 %. Our PRO Series drives offer the highest level of assistance with a maximum pedaling force assistance of 500 %.

Assistance mode

All Stromer Speed Pedelecs have a motor assistance in three different assistance modes that boost your pedaling force up to a speed of 45 km/h. The Stromer ST5 is additionally equipped with a Sport mode that unleashes additional power at the press of a button.

B

Battery

The e-bike battery is usually a rechargeable battery (accumulator). This is the energy storage device that supplies the motor of e-bikes, Pedelecs and Speed Pedelecs with electricity.

Battery capacity

The battery capacity refers to the stored amount of electricity of a battery and is given in the unit Ah (ampere hour). For the range of an e-bike or Speed Pedelec, however, it is not the battery capacity that is decisive but instead the energy in Wh (Watt hours).

Battery management system (BMS)

The battery management system (BMS) is an electronic circuit for monitoring the e-bike battery. It increases the safety of a battery pack by ensuring that all cells are operated only in the permissible voltage range. The load output is switched off if the currents are too high, the temperature is too high or if the permitted voltage window of a cell row in the battery is exceeded. A deep discharge of the battery in normal operation is prevented. In the event of problems with the charger, the BMS prevents the battery from overcharging.  The Stromer OMNI app can be used to monitor charge level, status and temperature of the battery.

D

Deep discharge

All battery chemistries basically exhibit unavoidable self-discharge, i.e. the stored electrical energy decreases over time. In modern lithium-ion cells, however, self-discharge occurs very slowly, with around 2–3 % charge loss per month. Over extended periods or due to excessively long storage of a battery completely discharged beforehand, however, there is a risk of the cell voltage dropping below a required minimum value. This process is called deep discharge and usually leads to an irreversible total failure of the battery, which cannot be prevented even by a modern battery management system (BMS). In practice it is recommended to store a lithium-ion battery with a charge status of approx. 40–60 % in a dry and cool (15–20 °C) place depending on the length of planned storage (typically 5–6 months). Storage in a fully charged state is also possible, but leads to faster cell aging overall.

Design

The award winning integrated design of the Stromer e-bike combines aesthetics and technology to perfection: from the tidy cockpit, the on-board computer integrated in the toptube and the sporty, striking frame silhouette with internal cable routing and integrated battery to the virtually invisible motor in the rear axle. Thanks to balanced weight distribution, you agilely cruise with your Stromer Speed Pedelec with safe roadholding through city traffic.

Discharge current

Discharge current refers to the current that the battery can deliver over a period of time. It does not remain constant over this period, but decreases with decreasing voltage. Depending on the type of current drain for which the battery is suitable, the discharge process also changes.

E

E-Bike

E-bikes are all electric bicycles that are not Pedelecs or Speed Pedelecs. In German-speaking countries, the term is often mistakenly used for any type of electric bicycle.

F

Freewheel

Freewheels connect rotating parts in one direction of rotation, while no coupling occurs in the other direction occurs. This enables very light, low-resistance rolling when the motor is switched off. The most common example is the freewheel in the rear hub of wheels. When you stop pedaling, the bike continues to roll without the cranks spinning. Without freewheel, this would not be possible and riding comfort would be affected.

G

GPS localization

All Stromer Speed Pedelecs with Stromer OMNI Interface C can be located via GPS.

H

Hub motor

Hub motors, unlike mid-mounted motors, are installed in the central hub of the front or rear wheel, making them the most direct way to power a wheel. At Stromer, we have relied on powerful rear-wheel motors from the very beginning.

K

Keyless

The “Keyless” function enables keyless battery ejection at the touch of a button

Not available on the Stromer ST1 X.

L

Lacing

Lacing is the installation of the motor in a wheel.

Li-ion

Li-Ion Akku

Li-ion is the abbreviation for lithium-ion. We offer batteries exclusively with lithium-ion technology, as this is superior to all other technologies in terms of energy density, service life and voltage level. More on the topic: battery technologies.

M

Mid-mounted motor

Mid-mounted motors are located in the bottom bracket area and directly drive the chain rings. Stromer has relied on rear-wheel or hub motors from the very beginning.

Motor settings

You can use Stromer OMNI to adjust the behavior of the motor, for example to select an assistance mode or regulate the pedal and brake sensors.

MCU

A microcontroller is a semiconductor chip that contains a processor and peripheral functions at the same time. This makes it a single-chip computer system. The term system on a chip or SoC is also used for some microcontrollers.

O

Overcharging

Overcharging occurs when a battery is supplied with too high a current for a long time. This can destroy the battery.

Overcurrent

Overcurrent is current that exceeds the maximum continuously permissible current. The resulting heat can damage connected devices. A battery management system (BMS) or controller can be used to prevent overcurrent.

For maximum service life, all batteries for Stromer Speed Pedelecs are equipped with a battery management system and controllers.

P

Pedaling force assistance

The sensor in the motor axle measures not only the speed, but also the pedaling force. The assistance is activated proportionally to the pedaling force. Depending on the strength of pedaling, the strength of the support is also increased.

Pedelec

“Pedelec” is the abbreviation for “Pedal Electric Cycle”.

Learn more about the differences between e-bike, Pedelec and S-Pedelec.

Power

Most efficient drive for Speed Pedelecs: The powerful Stromer e-bike rear-wheel motor transmits all its power directly to the hub for acceleration without delay from the first few feet. Because the torque remains unaffected by gear changes, you can steplessly take advantage of the full dynamics from 0 to 45 km/h – with the utmost running smoothness and virtual silence.

Push assistance

The Stromer e-bike push assistance accelerates your bike to 6 km/h and supports you while pushing. This is particularly practical on inclines or steep ramps. The push assistance can be activated via the display of your Stromer Speed Pedelec.

Pinion gearbox

Pinion gearbox technology functions on the basis of spur gearing with two gearing sub-units connected on the output end. The combination of both gearing sub-units with their different gear pairs generates the individual gears.

You can find more information about Pinion gearbox technology here: https://pinion.eu/en/technology/

R

Range

The e-bike range depends on various factors, such as rider weight, gradients on the route, pedaling force of the rider, wind strength, outside temperature, battery power and battery age.

The high-quality Stromer e-bike batteries available in four power levels and the efficient rear-wheel motor allow peak ranges of up to 180 km and, even with the highest motor assistance, are still capable of reaching 60 km. Your Stromer e-bike generates an extra range of up to 20 percent through regenerative braking. Stromer batteries can be charged quickly at every socket – after removal at the press of a button or directly in the bike.

Regenerative braking

Regenerative braking refers to the recovery of energy through downhill driving and braking. The energy generated in this way is fed back into the battery – in our experience, up to 10 % of the lost energy. This allows the overall range to be increased significantly.

Remote services

Remote service means you are always informed about the current status of your Stromer: e.g. battery charge level, battery temperature and engine temperature. And so is your specialist dealer, through whom you can have remote maintenance and automatic updates performed “over the air” thanks to new OMNI functions. Currently only possible with the ST1.

S
