Pinion Smart.Shift
How do I activate Smart.Shift Pre.Select?
Activating Smart.Shift Pre.Select
With software update 4.5.1.3, we introduced Pre.Select, a semi-automatic shifting mode. In this mode, your Stromer automatically shifts to the gear best suited to your current speed when you’re coasting without pedaling. This way, the correct gear is ready when you start pedaling again.
Requirements
- Stromer Bike with Pinion Smart.Shift
Additional information
- You can adjust your preferred cadence individually.
- The configured start gear from Start.Select is also taken into account.
- Manual shifting remains possible at any time.
How to activate
Go to:
MENU → BIKE → SMART.SHIFT → PRE.SELECT

How do I activate Smart.Shift Auto Shift Pro?
With software update 4.5.2.5 we introduced Auto Shift Pro – a fully automatic shifting mode for Pinion Smart.Shift. In this mode, your Stromer shifts gears automatically based on your target cadence. You are always in the right gear and can focus fully on the ride.
Requirements
- Stromer ST7 or ST5 with Pinion Smart.Shift and compatible Pinion hardware (see “Why is Auto Shift Pro not available on my Stromer?”)
- Software version 4.5.2.5 or later (including Pinion Smart.Shift firmware 1.18.0)
How to activate it
- Press and hold the upper shift trigger.
- Activation is confirmed on the display with the message “AUTO.SHIFT.PRO ON”.
- To switch it off, press and hold the upper shift trigger again. The display shows “AUTO.SHIFT.PRO OFF”.
Additional information
- Auto Shift Pro overrides other automatic modes (e.g. Pre.Select) and takes the start gear configured in Start.Select into account.
- Manual shifting is possible at any time. The newly selected cadence is directly adopted as the new target cadence and briefly shown in the gear indicator (e.g. 70 instead of the gear).
Why is Auto Shift Pro not available on my Stromer?
Auto Shift Pro requires the latest generation of Pinion Smart.Shift hardware. Both of the following components must be installed:
- Pinion gearbox (C1.12i or C1.9i) with the new shifting mechanism
- New-generation Pinion Smart.Shift Box (SB4)
Most vehicles already delivered are equipped with the previous hardware generation. On these vehicles, Auto Shift Pro is not shown and cannot be enabled via software update. All other shifting modes such as Pre.Select remain available as usual.
How to check whether your Stromer is compatible
- Update your bike to software version 4.5.2.5 or later.
- Open MENU → SYSTEM → ABOUT. If the entry “S_UMK_C (Auto.Shift)” is shown in the shifter section, your Stromer is Auto Shift Pro compatible.
Good to know: An upgrade to the new Auto Shift Pro compatible hardware is possible in principle. However, the conversion is not covered by warranty – the required components as well as the labour costs are at the vehicle owner’s expense.
Your Stromer dealer will be happy to advise you on availability and costs and to help with any further questions.
What is the difference between Pre.Select and Auto Shift Pro?
- Pre.Select (semi-automatic): Your Stromer automatically shifts into the appropriate gear when you coast without pedalling. While pedalling, you shift manually. Available on all vehicles with Pinion Smart.Shift.
- Auto Shift Pro (fully automatic): Your Stromer also shifts automatically while you pedal – based on your target cadence. Available on vehicles with the latest Pinion Smart.Shift hardware from software version 4.5.2.5.
Both modes can be overridden at any time by shifting manually.
